John Lennon Project
Those that think of John Lennon perhaps only contemplate a whirlwind lifestyle that shot the shy Liverpudlian to fame in the early sixties with the ‘Beatles’, followed by his solo career in 1967, lasting until his untimely death at the hands of a crazed gunman in New York in 1980.
This short epitaph does little to illuminate the huge achievement around each of these landmarks within his life.
The Beatles with John as the lead singer songwriter within the group became the most commercially successful band in the history of popular music. His solo career was underlined by his acerbic wit, music, drawings and political activism where he was so openly critical of the American administration during the Vietnam war that Nixon attempted to deport him.
Following his tragic death and by 2012, Lennon’s solo album sales in the United States exceeded 14 million and he’s been responsible for 25 number-one singles in the USA. In 2002 he was voted eighth out of a hundred Greatest Britons and Rolling Stone ranked him the fifth-greatest singer of all time in 2008. Posthumously inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1987 and into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice; John Lennon, along with Paul McCartney formed a songwriting partnership that is one of the most celebrated of the 20th century.
How could he not be one of my Icons & Legends?
